The Grand Challenges Initiative
Addressing What Matters Most, Together
How can we strengthen the fabric of our societies in times of deep polarization?
What does it take to make innovation not only transformative but truly responsible?
And how can we better respond to global health crises, address climate change, and unlock the full potential of emerging technologies?
These questions affect us all – they define our era and demand solutions that can only be found through collaboration.
With its Grand Challenges Initiative, the Berlin University Alliance unites cutting-edge research through collaboration across disciplines, institutions, and diverse stakeholders. It addresses the most urgent and complex issues of our time — challenges no single discipline, institution, community, or generation can solve alone.
Focusing on five Grand Challenges – Social Cohesion, Global Health, Responsible Innovation in Times of Transformation, Climate and Water under Change, and Quantum Technologies—researchers from the Berlin University Alliance work hand in hand with partners from civil society, politics, and industry.
The initiative fosters a research culture rooted in inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration, societal relevance, international partnerships, and the core values of open science, diversity, and inclusion.
At its core, this initiative is both a call to action and an open invitation: To build shared knowledge for better futures.
