Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin
Founded: 1710, making it one of the oldest hospitals in Germany. Since 2003, it has served as the joint medical faculty of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Overview: Charité is one of Europe’s largest university hospitals, with 3,001 beds and around 100 departments and institutes across four campuses. Research, teaching, and medical care are deeply interconnected, with scientists, researchers, and physicians collaborating across disciplines.
Over 7,500 students are currently enrolled in medicine and dentistry programs. Charité also has a rich legacy in medical science—more than half of all German Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine, including Emil von Behring, Robert Koch, and Paul Ehrlich, are associated with Charité.
Excellence Recognition
Charité is home to the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence under the German federal and state governments’ Excellence Strategy. Researchers from Charité also contribute to interdisciplinary clusters not solely focused on medicine, such as Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat) and others.
