Climate Justice, Legal Frameworks and Water Governance

Prof. Dr. Christian Calliess
Public Law | Freie Universität Berlin

This session explores sustainable water management and equitable access to water through the prism of justice, law, and power. The preferred format is an oral discussion or presentation. We will examine legal innovation, reflexive governance and legal forms of collaboration for water management in a changing climate.

Talks may address topics such as:

  • Climate-induced heavy rainfall events and their implications for water governance
  • Reconciling high standards of water quality and quantity with technological innovation and economic growth, for example in light of the Extended Producer Responsibility in the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive
  • Application and importance of general environmental law principles, such as the precautionary principle, for contemporary water governance
  • Challenges and pathways for the EU Water Framework Directive, especially the application of its non-deterioration principle
  • Aspects of sustainable water management and rights of use, especially in contexts of water scarcity, including hierarchies of use
  • Transnational and transregional management of water resources in Europe
  • Human rights-based and constitutional law approaches to sustainable water management

Suitable contributions not accepted as talks may be offered an opportunity to present a poster. We explicitly welcome innovative and critical perspectives.
