Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Founded: Early 19th century, making it the oldest higher education institution in Berlin.
Academic Focus: Since its founding, the university has pursued teaching and research in all fundamental academic disciplines—humanities, social and cultural sciences, law, life sciences, mathematics and natural sciences, medicine, agricultural sciences and sustainability research, and ancient civilizations.
Today, Humboldt-Universität is home to nearly 41,000 students from over 100 countries, enrolled in 180 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Around 480 professors guide and supervise the university’s diverse academic community.
Excellence Recognition
In 2012, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin was awarded the distinction of “University of Excellence” through the Excellence Initiative for its institutional strategy:
“Educating Enquiring Minds. Individuality – Openness – Guidance.”
Under the current Excellence Strategy (since 2018), the university has continued to receive recognition and funding.
