Grand Challenges Research: Principles, Practices, and Pathways
Prof. Dr. Petra Knaus
Vice President | Freie Universität Berlin
Grand Challenges are the big, urgent, and often “wicked” problems of our time – problems so complex that no single discipline, institution, sector, or generation can solve them alone. Research on Grand Challenges is a young and growing field, testing out new forms of collaboration. It builds on principles such as interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity, inclusion, openness, mission-driven and impactful research, and, above all, societal relevance. At its core is the idea of joint research: creating knowledge together across disciplines, sectors, and regions.
Is the space between the paragraphs too large?
This session invites participants to share experiences and open dialogue in order to inspire more cooperative, creative, and sustainable ways of addressing the challenges that shape our common future. We welcome contributions that highlight practices or principles for tackling complex societal problems, or that propose new ways to further develop and sustain solutions. Topics may include, but are not limited to: research design, institutional or governance structures, political engagement, the funding landscape, or the development of networks and capacities. Selected contributions may also be offered the chance to present a poster. Innovative and critical perspectives are explicitly encouraged.
