Urban Water and Climate Change

The urban water cycle deviates significantly from a natural setting, with high imperviousness and rapid drainage of stormwater. On the one hand, this deviation leads to issues during heavy rainfall, such as surface water pollution or flooding. On the other hand, the drained stormwater is lost for urban green infrastructure and evaporative cooling during droughts and heat waves. Climate-driven shifts towards more extreme rainfall events and prolonged drought periods will further aggravate these urban issues. This session explores both the causal links between the urban water cycle, climate change, and water extremes as well as the role of mitigation measures in moving towards a more natural water balance.
In particular, we would like to invite contributions on the following topics:
- Monitoring and simulation of the local urban water cycle
- Links between the urban water cycle and impacts of weather extremes
- Climate mitigation potential of sustainable/blue-green infrastructure regarding impacts, such as urban heat island effect, surface water pollution, flooding, or water availability
- Distinction between impacts of urbanization and climate change (Digital) tools for strategic water cycle improvement and climate adaptation
