Water-Related Hazards and Risks

Water-related hazards and risks have occurred more frequently and intensely worldwide in recent years and urban areas are specifically vulnerable. Such hazards comprise pluvial, fluvial and coastal flooding, droughts and heat waves as well as ecological catastrophes (e.g. fish dying) including compound events with critical urban infrastructure such as transportation or energy systems. Impacts of climate change, globally increasing urbanisation, and demographic change will further exacerbate the situation in most cases. Risks address the health of humans and the aquatic fauna as well as damages to buildings, the infrastructure, and the environment.
There is an urgent need to advance the understanding of the interplay of drivers, processes, and consequences to better predict water-related hazards and risks and develop suitable adaptation strategies across scales and sectors. We invite physics-based and machine learning methods, the integration of new data sources as well as multi-disciplinary approaches. Innovative scientific or practically-oriented contributions should come from the following fields:
- Flood hazard and risk modelling
- Modelling hazard and risk of droughts and ecological catastrophes
- Compound events and multi-hazards
- Early warning systems
